Little has changed in flail sprinkler design over the years; the uncomplicated design makes it suitable for areas with good water or where other types of heads can be resinified by hard water. The radius and arc can be easily adjusted; however, they require regular maintenance and the spring mechanism is often too noisy for residential locations. Because flail sprinklers are often made of bronze or brass, they can cost twice as much as a plastic, gear-driven rotor; however, they can last for years and have a much longer life in the field than plastic rotors.
